When I think of summer in Grand Rapids I think of two things: construction and patios. Everyone is looking for the best patio to sit on while they drink and socialize. These Beer City dwellers just suffered through six months of snow and no sun, can you blame them? I enjoy a patio as much as the next West Michigander, however I love a patio even more if I can bring my four-legged best friend. This has led me to start a summer blog series: Pandora-Friendly Patios. Each week, Pandora and I will venture out into the far corners of Furniture City to feature dog-friendly patios and offer a short review based on their food and pet accommodations.
We started our journey at Maru Sushi & Grill in East Hills. Maru offers a wide variety of sashimi, nigiri, sushi rolls as well as hibachi grills. Monday is 25% off all sake and their cucumber sake was the perfect drink to have while sitting on the patio. Pandora was greeted with a bowl of water as well, earning our server extra points.
The patio was nice and quiet, despite the other tables around us. The patio didn’t offer much shade coverage as the day went on, so I wouldn’t recommend taking your dog here if there is extreme heat. If she got hot, Pandora was able to curl up under her chair and take advantage of the shade it provided. There weren’t any distractions and Pandora was able to keep to herself during our visit. There wasn’t any overly loud music to stress her out, or food on the ground for her to pick at.
I started with the Kimchi and Rice and finished with the Rio Grande roll. Both were great and no, I’m not just saying that because I work here. The Rio is one of Maru’s vegetarian rolls and has asparagus, tomato, red pepper, avocado, Serrano pepper, guacamole and pico-de-gallo. I am obsessed with guacamole, so this roll is an easy choice for me. Adding Tuna or Tuna Tataki into the Rio is also a great option.
Maru always has awesome food, whether you like sushi or not. It is a great summer spot as their drinks are seasonal and refreshing, they offer a number of food items that appeal to a variety of palettes and they have a killer happy hour. Their pet-friendly patio is just an added bonus. Pandora gives it two paws up.
